I am a Psychotherapist and a Mental Health Counselor.
My favorite activity is to talk with other human beings about what
really matters to them. I believe in kindness, confidence, humor
and creativity.
I was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest,
but I have studied on the East coast and lived in England and in
China. I thrive on bringing together different elements: science
and spirituality, passion and grace, East and West, laid-back and
intense.
I have worked with people from all walks of life.
As a therapist, I can meet you where you are,
and I can go where you want to go. When I counsel people, I bring
all my tools, but you choose which ones we use: scientific, spiritual,
analytical or down-to-earth.
When I'm not working, I keep busy being a husband
and a parent, playing music, playing games, enjoying nature, and
sharing time with friends.
Influences/Schools of Thought
My theory of counseling is strongly influenced by
the holistic, egalitarian, community-minded approach of Alfred Adler
("Individual Psychology"). In addition, I incorporate ideas and
techniques from Carl Jung, as well as Humanistic, Gestalt, Existential,
and Systems psychologies. In addition, I am trained in EMDR, cognitive-behavioral
methods, and more. My academic background is in East Asian Studies,
with a focus on Buddhism and Taoism. I also studied for several
years with a Cherokee/Osage medicine teacher.
