My practice is to approach you with acceptance, interest, and complete
respect. I will gently meet you where you are at. Collaboratively,
we can clarify your goals for therapy. My intentions are to help bring
greater awareness to how you think, feel, and act, and to empower
you to grow safely. I can help you address the most important issues
in your life, so that you may have greater well-being, peace of mind,
and success in your relationships. We will likely explore topics that
are current in your life, your moment-by-moment experience of yourself,
and also memories from your past.
If I am working with a couple, family, or with
a parent and child, we may also explore different ways of interacting,
to increase understanding, love and respect, and find new solutions
to recurring problems.
My theory of counseling incorporates concepts and
tools from the holistic, egalitarian, community-minded approach
of Alfred Adler as well as Humanistic, Gestalt, Existential, and
Systems psychologies. I also utilize EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization
and Reprocessing), a scientifically-validated approach for treating
trauma.
In addition to Western therapeutic approaches,
I have an academic background in Asian philosophy, Buddhism and
Taoism. I also studied for several years with a Cherokee/Osage medicine
teacher. If you are interested, I can incorporate concepts and techniques
from these experiences in our work together. Examples include practicing
mindfulness, acceptance-work, compassion, forgiveness, confidence-building
techniques, dream-analysis and re-dreaming, and guided visualization.
I have helped individuals and families who have
experienced one or more of the following: trauma, loss, grief, depression,
anxiety, abuse, domestic violence, divorce, trouble with the law,
anger and explosive behavior, learning difficulties, addiction,
feelings of meaninglessness and disconnection.
I have extensive experience working with children,
teens, and parents. I greatly enjoy connecting with teenagers and
providing them a safe place to sort out their thoughts and feelings.
